FB: Huskies Home Win Streak Comes to an End

FINAL SCORE
Saskatchewan – 22
Alberta – 26

SASKATOON – It was a battle of the undefeated on another beautiful Friday night under the lights at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park. The Alberta Golden Bears came down for a visit and handed the Saskatchewan Huskies their first loss at home in since 2018. A slow start for the Huskies on both sides of the ball gave the Golden Bears all the momentum they needed to break the Huskies 19 game win streak at home.

The first quarter was all Alberta – not only did they outscore the Huskies 10-0 but QB Eli Hetlinger racked up 152 passing yards over Anton Amundrud's 81 yards. This was supplemented by the Bears defense forcing the Huskies into quick three and out drives.

The Golden Bears carried their defensive dominance into the second quarter – forcing the Dogs to punt the ball into the hands of Jaxon Hume four times in the first half. Further, the Bears added to their lead when Hetlinger took one and scored a major himself. The point after by Jonathan Giustini held the Huskies down 0-17.

Notably, the tables would turn before the end of the first half.

Finn Marcotte-Cribb played the hero with just under two minutes remaining – the cornerback snagged a pass from Hetlinger and ran straight into the endzone. David Solie's point after was good which put the Dogs on the board 7-20. After Marcotte-Cribb set the stage, momentum shifted in favor of the Huskies. Katley Joesph followed up with his own interception that brought the Huskies down to the 1-yard line late in the first half.

Joesph's possession exchange allowed Everett Iverson to walk right into the endzone, bringing the Dogs even closer to the Bears after another successful point after attempt by David Solie (14-20).

Defensively, Saskatchewan's Seth Hundeby and George Idoko shared a quarterback sack with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. Offensively, the veteran receiving core turned up, marching the Dogs down the field to the 35-yard line. Alberta did not let up however – David Kolkman managed to steal a pass intended for Rhett Vavra in the middle of the endzone and shift possession back to the Golden Bears.

Alberta's Giustini then closed the third quarter with a 47-yard field goal adding more to the score board and sent Saskatchewan into the final frame trailing 16-26.

David Solie opened the fourth-quarter with a missed 41-yard field goal attempt but Alberta was unable to gain any traction on the return, resulting in a rouge point for the Huskies (17-26).

A few long, completed passes by Amundrud brought the Huskies back into scoring territory. However, the Bears trusty safety, Jonathan Guistini, snagged an interception just 4-yards shy of the Huskies endzone.

Solie's final 37-yard field goal attempt sores through the goal posts, inching Saskatchewan closer to Alberta – 22-26.

Although the Huskies held the Bears away from scoring in the fourt, the team was unable to fully close the gap and the clock ran out on a four point victory for the Golden Bears. This dramatic contest took the undefeated title from the Huskies and made Alberta the first visiting team to leave Griffiths victorious since the Calgary Dinos in September of 2018.
