A Battle of the Undefeated

Only six days after taking down their provincial rival, the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0) will be back on the field to battle the Alberta Golden Bears (2-0). The action will take place Friday night in Huskie territory – Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park – and only one team will leave the contest still undefeated.

Saskatchewan is coming off a major Homecoming win after taking down the Regina Rams 40-6 setting their regular season off to a hot start. Meanwhile, across the border Alberta welcomed the Bisons in their home opener – they also managed seal a win (37-16).

Anton Amundrud made his home debut at starting quarterback in front of a record-breaking crowd. Amundrud filled up the stats sheet with an impressive 391 passing yards on 29/40 completions. The QB-RC connection between Amundrudand Rhett Vavra was on high that night as well. Vavra connected with his QB for a total of 130 yards and an astonishing 3 touchdowns. These two will be ones to watch for the Golden Bears.

As a major player in the Huskies veteran receiving core, fifth-year Daniel Perry enters this match-up ranked third nationally for receiving yards per game (112.5). Further offensive momentum can be expected from the second-year running back, Ryker Frank. Frank currently holds the fourth spot in the Canada West rankings for leaders in rushing yards per game (53.5). Ted Kubongo follows Frank close behind with an average of 52.5 rushing yards per game of his own.

Defensively, it will be difficult to get by Saskatchewan's emerging stars, notably Charlie Parks and Nathan Jule both chalked up their first sacks of the season and will likely be hungry for more action.

5 Things:
  1. Saskatchewan is looking to continue their regular season dominance after an undefeated at home during the regular season in 2022.
  2. In their last meeting the Huskies picked off Alberta's quarterback Eli Hetlinger three times – Nixon Voll, KatleyJoseph and John Stoll recorded their first career Canada West interceptions.
  3. Among other firsts, Branson Pipko scored his first touchdown as a Huskie against the Bears in 2022.
  4. Saskatchewan's starting pass slinger, Anton Amundrud, enters the weekend as reigning Canada West Football Offensive Player of the Week while leading the conference in passing yards per game (353.0) and touchdown passes thrown (8). Notably, Amundrud is also ranked No.2 nationally in those same two categories.
  5. Saskatchewan has not fallen to Alberta since 2019. Additionally, despite a handful of wins in their city, Alberta hasn't taken down the Dogs at Griffiths Stadium since 2010.

Scouting the Golden Bears:
Alberta has had a great start to their season, powering through Calgary (33-9) and Manitoba (37-16) consecutively. This is the first season since 2015 that the Bears have managed to start their season 2-0.

The Bears racked up 287 rushing yards in 34 carries – led by 158 yards from Matthew Peterson. The run game was supplemented by Eli Hetlinger's 196 yards and three passing touchdowns. Veteren kicker, Jonathan Giustini added three field goals on his own as well.

Alberta's receiving core carries some depth this season, with Jonathan Rosery, Carter Kettyle, and Chevy Thomas each scoring a major with 45, 45 and 28 yards respectively against the Bisons.

Defensively, the talent was spread among multiple Bears – Cole Priestly and Chase Pack nabbing four solo tackles while eight others recording two solo tackles each. Among those eight, third-year linebacker Dayton Ingenhaag also added a quarterback sack.
