WBB: Dogs Dominate with 101-34 Win Over Winnipeg Wesmen

WINNIPEG, MB – An 89-40 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night was the catalyst for another incredible performance from the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday evening in Winnipeg. The Huskies continued their dominance in Canada West with a 101-34 win over the Wesmen at the Duckworth Centre. 
 
THE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Saskatchewan's dominance started early in the game, outscoring the Wesmen 25-9 in the first quarter. Carly Ahlstom made back-to-back three-pointers midway through the quarter to give the Huskies the edge. Saskatchewan went up 18-1 before the Wesmen responded, having trouble in the quarter with hitting the threes. 
  • The Huskies continued to thrive into the second quarter, with Gage Grassick starting things off with a three. Logan Reider would add a three-pointer of her own a minute later. Maya Flindall would drain a three of her own in the quarter, as the Huskies headed into halftime with a commanding 32-13 lead. 
  • The Wesmen got into foul trouble early in the third quarter, sending Carly Ahlstrom and Courtney Primeau to the line. After adding four points in free throws, Tea DeMong, and Gage Grassick both hit a three-pointer, further extending the Huskie lead. Saskatchewan outscored the Wesmen 26-10 in the quarter. 
  • Maya Flindall started scoring in the fourth with three layups, adding six points to the Huskies score. Saskatchewan continued to push offensively in the quarter, scoring 23 to Winnipeg's 11 points. 
THE STATS
  • Carly Ahlstrom was the leading point scorer for the Huskies, with 19 points on the evening. She added six rebounds and a steal. 
  • Gage Grassick and Ella Murphy Wiebe led the Huskies in rebounds, with seven each. 
  • Leading point scorer for the Wesmen was Raia Guinto, with eight points. She added two rebounds and a steal. 
  • Rebounds belonged to Tamiya Ness and Anna Kernaghan with five each for the Wesmen. 
  • The Huskies were 90% from the free throw line, going 16-for-18. 
  • The game marked the first time this season that the Huskies have scored over 100 points in a game. 
THE STANDINGS
Saskatchewan remains one of the only two teams in Canada West with an undefeated record at 10-0, with the Trinity Western Spartans holding an 8-0 record. Saturday was Winnipeg's eighth straight loss as their record drops to 1-9. 
 
THE NEXT ONE
The Saskatchewan Huskies head into exam season and the winter break throughout December. The team will return to action at home on January 12 & 13, 2024 as they battle the UBCO Heat at the Physical Activity Complex.
