CALGARY, AB – Up against the 2022-23 U SPORTS women's hockey champions, the Saskatchewan Huskies were faced with a tough battle against the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday night. In front of a boisterous Cougars crowd, the Huskies dominated the ice, cruising to a 5-2 win over the defending champions.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- MRU's Lyndsey Janes scored the first goal of the game, propelling the Cougars to a 1-0 lead over the Huskies. Assists were provided by Ava Metzger and Julia Duke.
- Just over two minutes into the second period, the Huskies retaliated with Mallory Dyer leveling the score 1-1, assisted by Kara Kondrat and McKenna Bolger.
- Nearly two minutes later, the Huskies seized a 2-1 lead over the Cougars as Kelsey Hall netted a goal, assisted by Kendra Zuchotzki and Isabella Pozzi.
- Capitalizing on another Saskatchewan tripping penalty, MRU's Jori Hansen-Young found the net to get the 2-2 equalizer.
- With thirty seconds left in the second period, Sophie Lalor gave the Huskies the 3-2 advantage, with assists from Isabella Pozzi and Makenna Stevens.
- Saskatchewan extended their lead early in the third, with Kennedy Brown finding the net with help from Kenzie Lausberg.
- With the Huskies on the power play twenty seconds later, Sophie Lalor scored her second goal of the game, with assists coming from Kendra Zuchotzki and Isabella Pozzi.
THE STATS
- Huskie goaltender Camryn Drever earned the win for the Dogs, stopping 31 of 33 shots on goal. Kaitlyn Ross would be in net for the Cougars all game, stopping 21 of 26.
- Penalties were an issue on both sides of the puck, with the Huskies getting eight penalty minutes, compared to the Cougars 12 minutes. Saskatchewan scored on two of their six power play opportunities.
- Sophie Lalor now has seven goals for the Huskies, with two coming from Friday night's win. I
THE STANDINGS
The win keeps the Huskies in fourth place in Canada West, with a 10-4-0-1 record. The Cougars remain in third place with a 13-4-0 record.
