CALGARY, AB – For their final game of the year, the Saskatchewan Huskies looked to sweep the Mount Royal Cougars after a 5-2 win on Friday night at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary. The Cougars were determined to bounce back from their loss and ended their year on a high note with a 5-2 win over the Huskies.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Cougars opened scoring early in the first period, with Athena Hauck netting the first goal of the game, firing one past Saskatchewan's goaltender Colby Wilson.
- MRU capitalized on a Huskie cross-checking penalty late in the period. Emma Bergesen would score the power play goal, assisted by Aliya Jomha and Sydney Benko. The Cougars headed into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead over the Huskies.
- Saskatchewan promptly responded to open the second period. With an assist from Kelsey Hall, Jacquelyn Chief scored her first goal as a Huskie just over two minutes into the period.
- Another penalty for the Huskies gave the Cougars the advantage midway through the period. Making the most of the powerplay opportunity, Breanne Trotter extended MRU's lead 3-1.
- The Cougars continued to thrive on the powerplay, with Emma Bergesen propelling the team to a 4-1 lead with thirty seconds remaining in the second.
- MRU's fifth goal of the game came early in the third period. Lyndsey Janes slipped one past Camryn Drever with help from Ava Metzger to give the Cougars a commanding 5-1 lead.
- The Huskies secured a powerplay advantage with four minutes remaining in the period and Sara Kendall, with help from Kendra Zuchotzki and Isabella Pozzi, stepped up and notched her first game of the season.
THE STATS
- Saskatchewan would start the game with Colby Wilson in net. She would go 15-for-19 before being pulled in favour of Camryn Drever to start the third period. Drever went 4-for-5 in her twenty minutes in net.
- Both Sara Kendall and Jacquelyn Chief scored their first goals of the season for the Huskies in Saturday's loss.
- The Huskies were outplayed by the Cougars on the powerplay. MRU scored on three of their five powerplay opportunities, while the Huskies went 1-for-6.
THE STANDINGS
Saskatchewan's record stands at 10-5-0-1 and fourth place in Canada West, with the defending U SPORTS champion Mount Royal Cougars improving to 14-4-0 and third in Canada West.
