MKHY: Dominant Win for Huskies Over Rival Golden Bears

EDMONTON, AB - Leading 1-0 through 40, the U SPORTS #3 ranked Alberta Golden Bears surrendered three unanswered goals in the third period, dropping a 3-1 decision to the 8th ranked Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Golden Bears held an 18-14 shot advantage to go along with their one goal lead through two periods, only to see the Huskies score three goals on 12 shots to steal Friday night's victory.

Josh Pillar, Raphael Pelletier, and Gunner Kinniburgh scored for Saskatchewan, who improved to 9-0-0 in conference play. Roddy Ross stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced in a terrific performance between the Huskie pipes.

Jakin Smallwood scored the lone Bears goal in the opening period, turning in his most engaged and offensive performance of the season. Ethan Kruger was sharp despite the loss, stopping 23 of the 25 shots he faced.

A majority of the scoring chances for Alberta on Friday came off the stick of Smallwood, who was a force up front for the Bears. His first of the season came late in the first period, as he powered past the Huskies defence before blowing a shot past Ross.

Despite a healthy amount of offensive zone time, Alberta struggled to generate other top-grade scoring chances. The good looks they did have were turned aside by Ross for the remainder of the game.

Pillar leveled the game at 1's early in the third, beating Kruger with his fourth of the season. Saskatchewan earned their first lead of the game midway through the third, with Pelletier capitalizing on a two-on-none break for the Huskies, his sixth of the young season.

Kinniburgh's empty netter sealed the Huskie win.
