The Road to the Hardy Cup Runs Through Alberta

The Huskies are coming off an impressive win against the Regina Rams in Regina last Saturday, coming home with a 43-11 victory in the last U-Prairie Challenge presented by SaskMilk matchup of the football programs. The confidence earned with that win has certainly carried over, with a focused and determined week of practices as the Huskies turn their attention to the playoffs.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies have yet to win against the Alberta Golden Bears this season and Saturday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton will be the ultimate test as the Canada West Semi-Final gets underway.

In the last meeting between these two teams on October 14, the Golden Bears orchestrated a seven-play, 65-yard drive in the final minute of regulation, capped off with a Jonathan Giustini field goal as time expired, securing a 23-20 win over the Huskies.

At the quarterback position, Anton Amundrud has surpassed expectations. The second year is the fifth ranked quarterback in the nation, with an average of 273 passing yards per game and 2,184 passing yards overall. The strength of his passing is highlighted by impressive statistics from receiver Daniel Perry. With 511 yards, 26 receptions, and three touchdowns, fifth year Perry is the leading receiver for the Huskies and is expected to be a big player in the post-season.

Ryker Frank had one of his best games of the season against the Regina Rams last Saturday. The third year running back notched two touchdowns for 172 yards and finishing in 12th place in the U SPORTS rankings in rushing.

Linebacker Nick Wiebe continues to impress on defence, with 47 solo and 27 assisted tackles, placing him in third nationally with 60.5 total tackles. The third year from Calgary, AB has been a cornerstone of the Huskies defense, with his strength and speed dominating the field.

Alberta's quarterback will have to watch out for the Saskatchewan defense as a whole, with four of the six Canada West leaders in sacks coming from the Huskies. Defensive linemen Nathan Jule (4), Reece McCormick (3.5), and George Idoko (3) are joined by linebacker Seth Hundeby (3) on the sacks list and have spent the season putting immense pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

"It's going to be a gritty game," said fourth year linebacker Ramsay Derbas. "Both our games against Alberta this year have been close, and they have a tough team. It'll be a grind, that's for sure, but I'm confident in our team. We can get it done on Saturday."

Scouting the Golden Bears:
The Alberta Golden Bears are having one of their best seasons in recent history, with a 6-2 record and a first-place tie with the UBC Thunderbirds on top of the Canada West regular season standings.

Much of that success can be attributed to fourth year running back Matthew Peterson. The Brooks, AB product sits just 50-yards behind Queen's Jared Chisari in total rushing yards in U SPORTS with 1,128 yards in eight games. He is first overall in yards per rush with 9.6, and second in yards per game with 141. Saskatchewan's defense will have a busy game on Saturday trying to stop the Alberta run.

Eli Hetlinger is the third best quarterback in Canada West with 1,939 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions on the season. His go-to guy on the pass is receiver Carter Kettyle, leading the way with 29 receptions, 467 yards, and three touchdowns. Not far behind is Jonathan Rosery, adding 32 receptions, 439 yards, and three touchdowns.

The Golden Bears have strength at the linebacker position as well, with Chase Tataryn ranking sixth in the nation in defensive points, with 46 solo and 12 assisted tackles (52.0 overall).

A threat on both the defense and special teams, kicker/defensive back Jonathan Giustini has made a name for himself in Canada West this year. He's become the Golden Bears all-time leading point scorer with 270 points, has moved to the top of the team's field goal list with 58 career field goals, and has 28 solo and eight assisted tackles for the team as a defensive back this season.

5 Things:
1.    Saskatchewan has lost by less than five points in both games against the Golden Bears – a 22-26 loss on September 15, and a 20-23 loss on October 14.
2.    The first and only playoff meeting between Alberta and Saskatchewan at Foote Field was in 2004, with the Huskies earning a thrilling 21-20 upset win in the Hardy Cup.
3.    Saskatchewan sits in eighth place in the U SPORTS rankings, while Alberta is ranked tenth.
4.    Manitoba and UBC will play in the other Canada West Semi-Final game at 1:00 PM PST at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, BC.
5.    The Canada West All-Star Awards will be released on Monday, November 6, with the Major Award Winners being announced on Thursday, November 9
