WSOC: Saskatchewan Claims 1-0 Win Over Cougars in Regina

REGINA, SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies got an early goal off a set piece and hung on for a 1-0 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West match and U-Prairie Challenge rivalry game at the U of R Field.

Saskatchewan scored the lone goal of the game in the 15th minute. Jade Houmphanh sent a low, hard free kick from 30 yards out into the box which Regina keeper Kareena Andersen dove to handle, but the ball squeaked free to Marie Kilcher who tapped it home for her fifth of the season.

The Cougars generated an opportunity to tie it in the 48th minute when Peyton Enns slipped a pass through to a streaking Nicole Klassen, but her shot was saved by Saskatchewan keeper Kalin Roberts.

Regina had another good chance in the 73rd minute when Emma Davidson unleashed a cannon from 25 yards out, but Roberts was up to the challenge with a leaping save.

Shots on goal were 12-3 in favour of Saskatchewan, with Jade Houmphanh and Alyssa D'Agnone continuing to be a force on offence. They each had three shots on goal during the game, with Regina's Andersen saving them all. Andersen made 10 saves for the Cougars, while Roberts earned the shutout for Saskatchewan with three saves.

The win puts the Huskies at 7-3-1 overall on the season, moving them from third place in the Canada West Prairie Division to second place, sitting just behind the 8-2-1 MacEwan Griffins. Regina sits in fifth place in the division with a 2-5-4 record.
