LANGLEY, BC – The Saskatchewan Huskies settled for a weekend split with the Trinity Western Spartans with a 4-2 win Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre. The win moves the Huskies to 6-2-0 while the loss drops the Spartans to 4-3-1.
Fifth year goalie
Camryn Drever was outstanding for the Huskies, making 45 saves in the win. Trinity Western's Mabel Maltais made 27 stops for her team.
The Huskies
Kara Kondrat opened the scoring at 17:44 of the opening frame after a goal mouth scramble saw the puck lifted into the top of the Spartans' net.
TWU's Michaela Naccarato got her first of the year with a breakaway short-handed goal at 0:59 of the second period.
Saskatchewan took advantage of a two-on-one opportunity at 13:16. The Huskies
Sara Kendall found
Jasper Desmarais for her first goal to put Saskatchewan up 2-1.
TWU forward Kate Klassen almost tied the game at 14:28 when her shot from just inside the right circle rang off of the Saskatchewan cross-bar.
Isabella Pozzi got the turning point goal 19 seconds later to put Saskatchewan up 3-1.
Saskatchewan's
Mallory Dyer took advantage of a loose puck near the boards to come out front and find the top corner, putting the Huskies up 4-1 at 18:22 of the second period.
TWU dominated the third period firing 21 shots on target, but only Brooklyn Anderson's slap shot from the point, off a faceoff win by forward Olivia Leier on the power play, was able to find the back of the Huskies net as Saskatchewan took the 4-2 win.
The Spartans out shot Saskatchewan 47-31 on the night but Drever had an incredible night in goal for the Huskies. Drever has made 133 saves in the six games she has been in net and is a force to be reckoned with.
