WHKY: Huskies Fall to Trinity Western Spartans

VANCOUVER, BC – The Saskatchewan Huskies made a trip out to BC to take on the Trinity Western Spartans for the first time in the 2023-24 season. A strong second period from the Spartans would give the home team the 4-1 win over the Huskies.

The Spartans opened scoring at 10:29 in the first period, when fifth year forward Katherine Chadwick found her way past Saskatchewan's Colby Wilson for the 1-0 lead. The Huskies struggled offensively, unable to find their way through the Spartans defence. A Huskie power play at the end of the period was their best opportunity to tie things up but they were unable to capitalize and headed into the second period trailing by one.

The second period was dominated by Trinity Western, who blew open the game with three unanswered goals. Third year forward Chloe Reid got the Spartans off to a quick start, scoring at 1:33 into the second. Two and a half minutes later, Chadwick would score her second of the night at 4:07, putting the Spartans up 3-0. Saskatchewan Head Coach Steve Kook would make a goaltending change shortly after, trading third year Colby Wilson for fifth year Camryn Drever

Second year Ella Boon would add to the Spartans lead with a blue-liner at 18:41, giving Trinity Western the 4-0 lead over the Huskies after two periods of play.

Saskatchewan's Kelsey Hall would end the Spartans hope of a shutout with a power play goal at 18:24 into the third period, scoring the lone goal of the night for the Huskies. She was helped by fifth year Kara Kondrat and third year McKenna Bolger who added assists on the goal. The Huskies comeback would be cut short by the clock, with the Spartans defending home ice with the win.

Kate Fawcett had a great night in goal for Trinity Western, making 39 stops to earn the win for the Spartans, while Colby Wilson and Camryn Drever combined for 21 saves in the Huskies' loss.

The loss drops the Huskies to 5-2, while the win moves the Spartans to 4-2-1.
