MSOC: Late Goal Gives Griffins Edge Over Huskies

SASKATOON, SK – A beautiful Thursday night at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park was the setting for the Saskatchewan Huskies matchup against the MacEwan Griffins. A goal from the visitors in the 85th minute would have the Griffins escape Griffiths Stadium with the 1-0 win.

Jaron Slopinski would get the start in goal for the Huskies, while MacEwan would go with rookie David Sithole in net. Head Coach Bryce Chapman has had Slopinski goal for most of the season and he has made some incredible saves for the Dogs.

First year Holden Mcleay had a huge hustle in the 17th minute, with a cross field pass to Ahmed Mohammed, who narrowly missed the MacEwan goal. The 22nd minute had Kevin Garic boot one halfway down the field to a waiting Mohammed only to be stopped by the MacEwan's defence. Matthew Hnatiw nabbed the rebound, but the resulting shot went just high.

MacEwan and Saskatchewan played some fast and furious ball in the first half, with the Griffins Phillip Masri speeding down the field in the 33rd minute as his shot went high of the Huskies net, keeping the game scoreless. Heading into the break, the game would be tied 0-0 with the Huskies outshooting the Griffins 5-4.

A beautiful opportunity awaited the Huskies in the 52nd minute when a lightning quick strike from Mohammed found its way past Sithole. An offside call against Saskatchewan would negate the goal.

Saskatchewan drew a free kick in the 72nd minute, with second year Diego Reveco heading to the line. The shot went wide right and the game against these two tough teams remained scoreless. An incredible shot from MacEwan's Ali Yildiz in the 83rd minute was stopped short by Slopinski.

The Griffins would hit the scoreboard with a quick goal from third year Antony Caceres to give MacEwan the 1-0 lead in the 85th minute. The Huskies would push hard in the final minutes of the game but were unable to connect offensively, and the Griffins headed home with the 1-0 win.
