FB: Narrow Loss for Huskies Against Golden Bears

EDMONTON, AB – It was a U SPORTS Top 10 matchup in Edmonton on Saturday afternoon, as the #6 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies took on the #9 ranked Golden Bears. The Huskies were looking for redemption against the Golden Bears, who gave the Huskies their lone loss of the season on September 15. The Golden Bears would hand the Huskies their second loss of the season, with a narrow 23-20 win.

The Golden Bears orchestrated a seven-play, 65-yard drive in the final minute of regulation, capped off by a 33-yard Jonathan Giustini field goal as time expired to secure the win.
Starting the drive on their own 20-yard line with 67 seconds remaining, the Bears gained 65 yards on four completions and three rushes, with a 23-yard rush from Matthew Peterson putting Alberta in field goal range.

Alberta led by 11 after the opening quarter, thanks to a rouge and a field goal from Giustini, and a 51 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eli Hetlinger to Jonathan Rosery. Saskatchewan's Rhett Vavra would haul in a 15 yard pass from quarterback Anton Amundrud, and a 49 yard field goal from kicker David Solie would bring the score to 11-10 for Alberta to end the first half.

The third quarter would see Giustini add two more rouges for the Golden Bears, and another touchdown from Peterson, his second of the game. Solie would end the quarter with a 27 yard field goal for the Huskies, leaving Saskatchewan trailing 20-13 to start the fourth.

Daniel Wiebe's clutch touchdown halfway through the fourth quarter would tie things up for the Huskies at 20-20. Alberta's Giustini would make the 33 yard walk-off field goal to give the Golden Bears the win.

Anton Amundrud tossed for 262 yards on 18/30 passing for Saskatchewan. Ryker Frank rushed for 74 yards on six carries, with Josh Ewanchyna adding 27 on seven rushes.

Peterson — the top rusher in the nation — turned in another stellar performance for Alberta, racking up 192 rush yards on 22 carries, adding a touchdown. Hetlinger finished with 263 passing yards on 20/32 passing in the win.
