MBB: Huskies Come up Short Against WolfPack

SASKATOON – The Huskies were back in action taking on the visiting TRU WolfPack searching for their first win of 2023.

The offence for both teams started out slow tonight and it was Sasktacheawn's Fisayo Moibi who opened up scoring for the Huskies with the three after going 2 for 5 from deep last night. TRU's offence would go three for nine from deep in the first quarter, while the Huskies would struggle, going one for seven. Denys Bachurin had seven points for the WolfPack as they would lead 17-11 after the first.

The WolfPack came out strong early in the second quarter but with just over three minutes to play in the half, the Huskies pulled within one. Saskatchewan's Tyrese Potoma hit a late three for the Huskies to send both teams to the locker room for halftime tied at 36-36.

The second half started much like the first half with both teams unwilling to give an inch in the back-and-forth affair. An 11-0 run by the WolfPack to close out the final few minutes of the quarter would see TRU with a ten-point lead heading into the third quarter.

Saskatchewan's Alexander Dewar and Potoma hit back-to-back threes to open the fourth quarter, cutting the TRU lead to four. Moments later, Maxwell Amoafo sent the ball flying with a sensational block and Moibi hit another three on the next possession to cut the TRU lead to just one point.

With 3:10 left in the game, a Dewar free throw tied it for the Huskies. A seven-point run by the WolfPack would prove to be too much for the Huskies as they fell 80-74 to TRU.

Saskatchewan was led by Dewar for the second night in a row, with 20 points on the evenitng, with Potoma up next with 10 points and seven assists. Maxwell Amoafo had a game high nine rebounds. Bachurin had 21 points for the Wolfpack while Asher Mayan had 20, Daniel Bost had 17 and Cyrus Harrison had 15.

The Huskies will need to turn it around quickly if they hope to make it back to the playoffs as that is their ninth straight loss after opening the season with a win.

The Huskies will hop on the bus next weekend and make a trip to southern Alberta to take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday and Saturday. Friday nights matchup will go at 7:00 PM (CT) and will be live on CanadaWest.TV.
