SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies (12-2) are on a ten-game winning streak that the Trinity Western Spartans (11-5) were hoping to snap on Friday night. The Huskies would take their win streak to 11 after a 82-76 win.
The Spartans came out strong in the first quarter, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead. While the Huskies started out slow, it wasn't long before they tied things up at 13-13. Teams would go back and forth for much of the first quarter, ending with a slight lead for TWU at 23-22.
The second quarter would see teams find their rhythm, with an impressive three-point shot from
Carly Ahlstrom to put the Huskies up 29-23. TWU's Shemaiah Abatayo would make a quick three of her own right after, bringing the game within three at 29-26 Huskies. The quarter would progress with teams trading points, with the Spartans heading into the half with a narrow 45-44 lead.
The third quarter was dominated by the Huskies defence, who kept the Spartans to just nine points in the quarter. Saskatchewan outscored TWU 20-9 this quarter, thanks to a strong showing from
Ella Murphy Wiebe. The Huskies headed into the fourth quarter with a ten point, 64-54 lead.
The fourth quarter would see the Spartans offence hit their groove, outscoring the Huskies 22-18. The comeback was just a little too late, as the Huskies would keep the pressure on TWU and grab the win.
Leaders for the Huskies would be
Logan Reider with 21 points, followed closely by
Carly Ahlstrom with 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Trinity Western was led by Jayden Gill with 27 points, and Nicole Fransson with 19 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
