SASKATOON – Three stunning strikes from the Huskies were the difference in a late Saturday night matchup against the Lethbridge Pronghorns, as the Huskies picked up the first win of their season.
KB Bekwayo opened the Huskie campaign in style with a screamer from the edge of the box at the 29-minute mark of the game.
Huskie newcomer
Ethan Cabral started his Huskie career with a bang, scoring just six minutes later with a shot that found the top corner of the net.
The Dogs continued to apply the pressure in the second half. Second-year striker
Ahmed Mohammad capitalized off a
Diego Reveco through ball to push the Huskie lead to three.
Saturday's game started nearly two hours after its initial 7:30 kick-off, due to severe weather impacting the women's soccer game earlier in the evening.
"I think the day in itself allowed our guys to face some adversity, you know, when you're dealing with up to a two-hour rain delay and uncertainty of when you're starting and staying focused, uh, your routines were pretty broken up. That really showed the character of the group right off the get go," said Huskie head coach
Bryce Chapman.
"Everything kind of meant a little more than non-conference and you can't teach that until you experience it. So, when you look at the number of young players that were on the pitch and, and how they gelled pretty well. There were a lot of really good moments throughout the game, and I think it gives us a really good steppingstone for next weekend. We know Alberta and MacEwan are two excellent, tough opponents. So, we'll definitely have to move forward on that."
Jaron Slopinski made his debut in net for the Huskies. The Regina, SK-product made the most of his opportunity, walking off the pitch with his first U SPORTS clean sheet.
First-year Pronghorn Tegan Romaine made his first career U SPORTS start for Lethbridge.
The Huskies next game will take place on September 2 when they host the Alberta Golden Bears in the annual Bateman Cup at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park. Tickets are now available at huskietickets.com.
