WSOC: Huskies Prevail in Season Opener

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team started off the season in dramatic fashion, after coming back from a one-nil deficit to score three unanswered in their Canada West season opener.

The Huskies started the game by controlling possession throughout the opening minutes. However, it was Winnipeg's Jazmyn Castro who scored the opening goal in the contest with a perfectly placed corner kick in the 27th minute.

The Huskies were able to equalize in the 52nd minute after fourth-year veteran Payton Izsak scored within the six-yard box.

Alyssa D'Agnone then added to the Huskie lead scoring twice in two-minutes.

D'Agnone's first goal was a strike from distance that found the back of the net after a scorching run through the midfield. Two minutes after taking the lead, D'Agnone converted from the spot to put the Huskies up 3-1.

"We were generating chances; we just weren't capitalizing, and I think Winnipeg definitely has improved. They scored against the run of play, so we told the girls just to keep believing, to settle down and play to our standard. We knew that if we did that, we were going to get the result," said Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica-Hamilton.

"We just wanted the girls to take it all in, there is a lot of new first years playing, and they were all excited to play in front of a great crowd. Again, this community is just so special to play in front of, so we just told them to just take a step back and play our brand of football."

The Huskies will now face the Manitoba Bisons on August 27 at 5 PM at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park.

"I loved the second half, the way we were possessing the ball, the way we were being patient, switching it from side to side, dominating at creating chances, the energy defensively being really stable. That's what we want to see. Big picture is that this is just step one of 14 plus playoffs. So we want to get to nationals, and this was one step to get there and we're excited for tomorrow," added Barandica-Hamilton.
