The win sends the Huskies to their first national final since 2010, which also happened to be their lone national title in program history.
"We talked about this all year, and it took a lot of hard work to get here. We had to grind out a lot of tough games, and now to actually be here, it means a lot," said Stephens on advancing to the U SPORTS Final. "We wanted to set the tone early tonight, and we did. We brought a lot of energy over from last night too."
The CW second-team all-star was phenomenal for the second-straight night, lighting up the box score to the tune of a 25/4/6 line that included a game-high +30 mark. Seven Huskies joined him over five points in a complete team effort in which the team finished 30 for 64 on field goals.
"This is crazy, we had so many fans who made the trip here to support us," said Stephens of the over 1,000 fans in attendance, a vast majority of which Huskie supporters. "They helped us keep our energy up when we are down."
Queens was paced by Quinton Gray who finished with a team high 13 points in a night that no Gael could get much of anything going against a stout Huskie defence.
The Gaels led after one thanks to a 3/4 quarter off the bench from fifth-year guard Henry Van Herk. The lead would not last long, as Stephens and the Huskies shooters promptly took over the second quarter. They shot 50% from the field, including a 5/9 mark from deep and entered the locker room up 45-31 at halftime.
Stephens led all scorers with 20 at the break, a line that included three rebounds and five assists. The Gaels were paced by Quinton Gray who continued his great tournament with eight points.
If outscoring the Gaels 25-10 in the second was not enough momentum for the Huskies, how about a 32-8 third quarter in which they firmly took control of the game. They shot 58% from the field and eight different Saskatchewan players had a bucket in the frame. In the inverse, Queens' 15
th U SPORTS ranked offence was nowhere to be seen, sporting an ugly 2/20 mark from the field and shooting just 4/9 from the line.
The fourth quarter would see the Gaels in better form, recapturing some momentum for the team going into Sunday's Bronze Medal Game.
The Huskies continue their Cinderella run as the eight seed and will advance to play the winner of the late semifinal, between the host No. 3 Alberta Golden Bears and the No. 7 Carelton Ravens, in the Gold Medal Match tipping off at 6PM MST/8PM EST. The Gaels first appearance in the U SPORTS Final Eight will continue in the Bronze Medal Match tomorrow at 3PM MST/5 PM EST, facing the loser between Alberta and Carleton.
