CHARLOTTETOWN – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team was unable to solve the Concordia Stingers, as they fell by a score of 2-0 in the U SPORTS National Championship.
Concordia got second-period goals form Audrey Belzille and Maria Manarolis, putting the Huskies in a two-goal deficit through two periods of play, proving to be a deficit the green-and-white were unable to dig themselves out of.
The best chance of the evening for Saskatchewan came off the stick of Sara Kendall in the final four minutes of regulation. The first-year forward weaved through a trio of Stingers, but her wrister found the iron — and Concordia was able to hang on to the two-goal lead and eventually the win. The Stingers will play for a national title tomorrow, when they take on the OUA's Nipissing Lakers at MacLauchlan Arena
Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever did all she could and continued her sensational postseason, making 37 saves on 39 shots, keeping her team hanging around all night long. The Edmonton product was named the Player of the Game for Saskatchewan.
The Huskies will play for their first national medal since 2013-14 and second in program history tomorrow afternoon, when they take on the UNB Reds in the bronze medal game. Puck drop is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CST and 2:30 p.m. AT.
The game will be the final-time Bailee Bourassa will take the ice as a member of the program and will put a wrap on a historic season for Saskatchewan, as they reached the national championship for the fourth-time in program history.
