Ahlstrom’s barrage from long-range helps Huskies in win over Wesmen

SASKATOON — The University of Saskatchewan Huskies made a second-half statement on home court, en route to a 12-point victory over the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen on Ron & Jane Centre Court at the PAC.

It was Carly Ahlstrom who led the way for the Huskies going 4-9 from beyond-the-arc — with two of the makes coming in the fourth quarter, catapulting the Huskies to five and eight-point leads down the stretch. Ahlstrom finished the night with a game-high 20 points to go along with 10 boards, recording the double-double.

"I definitely think it came with good timing. My teammates found me well and we were able to get it done in the second half," said Ahlstrom.

Ahlstrom led the way on the offensive end, but the Saskatchewan defence can't be forgotten, as they limited the Wesmen to just 12 points on the defensive end.

"We really had to grind it out tonight," said Thomaidis. "Kudos to our defence. I thought we did a really good job of upping the intensity and then locking them down."

The win was a massive one for the Huskies. They moved to 14-1 and ahead of the Wesmen for first-place in the Canada West — a spot they can clinch with a win tomorrow night.

"Tomorrow is a big one forsure," said Thomaidis.

"We're taking it game by game. We still got one tomorrow, so we got to focus on that, but we'll definitely take the win tonight and come back tomorrow and hopefully get the second," said Ahlstrom

Meanwhile with the loss, the Wesmen fell to 13-2 — with both of their two defeats coming at the hands of the Huskies.

Keylyn Filewich led Winnipeg with a 12-point, 11-rebound effort, while Faith Hezekiah chipped in eight points.

Thomaidis and Ahlstrom both credited the atmosphere in what was the Huskies first game with fans back in the stands since Dec. 4.

"It was super special," said Ahlstrom. We're always so grateful to have such a good fan base and I think that's amazing for our fifth years on their last weekend here."

"I love the fact that so many people came up tonight to support us and hopefully it'll be an even bigger crowd tomorrow," said Thomaidis.

As mentioned, the pair of conference powerhouses will do battle once again tomorrow night, with tip-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the PAC.
