Ballhorn’s two-goal night helps Huskies host home playoff series

SASKATOON — The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team took care of business, locking up fourth-place in the Canada West and a quarter-final series at Merlis Belsher Place after a 6-2 win over the Manitoba Bisons.

After a three-goal lead was the difference for the Bisons on Friday night, the visitors had to be feeling pretty good about their opening 10 minutes on Saturday, as Linden McCorrister and Dylan Thiessen each found the back of the net in the early-going — making it 2-0 Manitoba.

But Jared Dmytriw cut the deficit in half at the midway point of the first with a forehand-backhand beauty and then it was Ballhorn time as the team captain scored back-to-back goals in 2:51 to give the Huskies the lead.

From Dmytriw's goal on it was all Dogs — as he kickstarted what was six unanswered from the homeside, after Jaxan Kaluski scored his team-leading 13th of the season and Vince Loschiavo and Donovan Neuls potted goals in the late stages of the third.

After allowing the two quick ones in the first 6:29 of the hockey game, Jordan Kooy shut the door from then on. Kooy made 17 saves en route to the second victory of his young Huskies career.

At the opposite ice, Jeremy Link made 33 saves for the visiting Bisons.

The matchup served as Manitoba's final game of the 2021-22 season, as they fell to 7-12-1 on the season. The Bisons finished in seventh-place in the Canada West, missing out on the six-team playoff by six points.

Meanwhile for the Huskies, the win ensured this wasn't the last game on home ice for the green-and-white this season. Saskatchewan will now play host to the Calgary Dinos on February 25 in Game One of the Canada West quarter-final at Merlis Belsher Place.
