WHKY: Huskies Lose a Close one to Mount Royal

SASKATOON – Huskies opened the evening looking to sweep the nation's number five ranked team the Mount Royal Cougars. The Cougars flipped the script on the Huskies tonight winning 1-0. With last night's 1-0 win, the Huskies split the series with the Cougars.

The Huskies had a chance in the first when MRU took a penalty ten minutes in but were unable to sneak one past the Cougars goaltender Kaitlyn Ross. Jayde Cadieux from the Huskies would take a penalty with just under five minutes left in the second, giving MRU the powerplay. The Huskies would stand tall and escape the first period 0-0. The Dogs outshot the Cougars 12-7 in the period.

The second period saw Saskatchewan go to the power play just under two minutes into the second and then again nine minutes in but again were unable to find the back of the net. With multiple powerplay opportunities in the period, the Huskies were outshot 9-4 with MRU dialing up the pressure in the second.

All tied up heading into the third at 0-0, Saskatchewan would again head to the powerplay two more times in the first eight minutes. Kaitlyn Ross would be a force in net for the Cougars and the Huskies were unable to capitalize. Kate Ball would then head to the box for Saskatchewan nine and a half minutes into the frame, but the Huskies Camryn Drever held her ground. With just over three minutes left Kiana McNinch scored to give the Cougars all they needed. With two seconds left the Cougars took another penalty but there was not enough time for the Dogs to score, and MRU would hold on to win 1-0.

Camryn Drever had 24 saves on 25 shots on the evening for the Dogs while Kaitlyn Ross had 24 saves for the MRU in the shutout effort.

It was a battle of goaltenders in Saskatoon this weekend as Drever and Ross combined to stop 102 of 104 shots they faced, showcasing their strength in net.

The Huskies went 0-6 on the powerplay and Mount Royal went 0-2.

The Huskies hit the road next weekend after an extended home stand to take on Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg on Friday night at 7:00 PM and Saturday at 3:00 PM. Live stream of the games are available on CanadaWest.TV.
