WHKY: Huskies with the Shutout Against the MacEwan Griffins

SASKATOON, SK – Looking to capitalize on last night's 5-2 win, the Saskatchewan Huskies (7-3) took to the ice at Merlis Belsher Place for game two of the weekend series against the MacEwan Griffins (3-8). While last night's game was dominated by the offence, it was the Huskies defence that was red hot, leading the Dogs to a 1-0 win.

"I thought it was a good solid game for us," said Huskies Head Coach Steve Kook. "It might not have looked like it but we were actually trying to get two or three out there."

After impressive performances in last night's win, the Huskies started Kendra Zuchotzki, Isabella Pozzi, Taylor Wilkinson, Kate Ball and Kelsey Hall. The Dogs made a goaltending switch as Camryn Drever was in net for the Dogs over Colby Wilson, who played sixty minutes in net last night. MacEwan starters included Rebecca Thiessen, Sydney Olsen, Claire Hobbs, Allee Isley and Kori Patterson, with Brianna Sank in net for the second night in a row.

The lone goal of the game would come in the first period, with Kennedy Brown scoring her fourth of the season, with the assist from Kendra Zuchotzki on the power play at 15:06. MacEwan took heavy penalties in the first period with Mila Verbicky, Hailey Maurice and Kali MacDonald all finding their way to the box.

The second period would see the penalties increase, with Kendra Zuchotzki, Emily Holmes and Kennedy Brown headed to the box for the Huskies, alongside Jayme Doyle and Allee Isley for the Griffins. While both teams were aggressive and driving hard to the puck, neither team would find the net and the period ended 1-0 for the Huskies.

The third saw incredible control and defensive prowess from both teams as there were no penalties or goals for either team. Camryn Drever would get the shutout for the Huskies, while Brianna Sank was busy in net, saving 28 out of 29 shots on goal.

"That's the MacEwan team we thought might see," said Kook. "They play hard, they play hard on the puck. They were just a constant breakout for us. I'm pretty sure when we get to watching video we'll have a hundred breakouts to watch.

"Two clean points are important at this time of year. We just have make sure we keep getting points if we want to try and host a home playoff game."

The Huskies return to Merlis Belsher Place next weekend to take on the Mount Royal Cougars. Tickets can be purchased at huskietickets.com and the live stream can be viewed on CanadaWest.TV.
