Box Score SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies played host to the Mount Royal Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night.
Saskatchewan was able to fend of the high-powered Cougar offence that has 41 goals on the season for a 1-0 win.
The first period was evenly matched with the Huskies working to keep the Cougars offence off the board. Mount Royal would take a penalty just six and a half minutes in, but the Huskies were unable to capitalize on that opportunity.
Just under 15 minutes into the frame Saskatchewan was given another powerplay as Morgan Ramsey went to the box for the Cougars. The Huskies again were unable to find the net.
With 40 seconds left in the opening period Sara Kendall found herself and
Sophie Lalor on a two on one. Kendall made no mistake on the pass and Lalor made MRU pay with a beautiful deke on Kaitlyn Ross to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead.
MRU would open the second on the power play after a late penalty in the first on the Huskies. The Dogs were able to kill it off the player advantage. The Huskies would have another power play chance five minutes into the frame but again were unable to find pay dirt. The Huskies would put MRU back on the power play when Kendra Zuchotzki went to the box just over halfway through the period. The Huskies stood tall and were able to keep their 1-0 lead heading into the third despite being outshot 15-6 in the second.
In the third Saskatchewan would have two more chance on the power play in the first 10 minutes to extend the lead but could not crack Ross. Although the Huskies were unable to add an insurance marker one would be all they need as the veteran
Camryn Drever was perfect stopping every shot on the night. The 1-0 score after the first would hold up to give the Huskies the win.
Drever stopped 31 of 31 on the night for her second straight shutout. Ross stopped 23 of 24 shots for the Cougars.
These teams are back in action tomorrow night at 5:00 PM at Merlis Belsher Place. Tickets can be purchased on HuskieTickets.com
