WHKY: Huskies Home Opener Weekend Split with the Dinos

SASKATOON – Friday night's thrilling overtime win against the Calgary Dinos was the ideal start to the Huskies season at home. Game two of the series showcased dominate defense on both side of the ice. Ultimately, Saturday was for the Dinos – the Huskies fell 0-1 in double overtime.

The first period was a defensive battle. There were just 15 total shots on goal and only seven shots on Saskatchewan goaltender Colby Wilson. Brooklyn Stevely hunted for the back of the net in the first period with three shots on goal but was unsuccessful in her pursuit. Neither team was able to capitalize offensively. The Huskies and the Dinos ended the first period 0-0.

The trend followed through the second and third periods, with defense running the game. Offensively for the Huskies, Isabella Pozzi and Brooklyn Stevely both had four shots on goal, with Kelsey Hall and Larissa Bohlken contributing three shots on goal of their own.

The second year Dog, Colby Wilson, got the start in net for the Saskatchewan and ended the night with 28 saves. For Calgary, Gabriella Durante started as goalkeeper and racked up 32 saves.

After regulation time ended with no score for either side, the game carried into overtime. It was the Dinos own Elizabeth Lang, with help from Jada Burke and Alli Burrow, who finally slid one past the Huskies. Lang's heroic finish happened 2:13 minutes into the second overtime period.

"I thought we were better tonight. I thought we were way better as a crew. We moved the puck really well," said Head Coach Steve Kook post-game.

Kook added, "Kara Kondrat has been good all year for us, especially with Sophie going down last night, we looked to Kara to pick up a little bit of the offensive pressure and I thought she was really good on that line tonight."

Colby Wilson on the pressure of action – "I had pretty good faith in my team that we were going to get one in. Sadly, it didn't happen, but we were doing everything right. I just had to make sure I held up my end of the bargain for them"

"It's nice to know that the defense has my back and hopefully if I mess up, they're there to catch me and if they mess up, I'm there to catch them. It's nice to have that trust in each other," Wilson added.

While the Huskies lose a double overtime heartbreaker, the focus shifts to next weekend when the 2-2 Huskies will welcome the 3-1 UBC Thunderbirds to Merlis Belsher Place. Get your tickets at HuskieTickets.com.
