WHKY: Huskies Win Overtime Thriller Against UBC

The Huskies women's hockey team was back in action tonight at Merlis Belsher Place against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. The last time these two teams met in March of 2022, UBC shutout the Huskies in both games, outscoring the Huskies 5-0. Saskatchewan was looking to turn the tide tonight and pick up the win at home.

Camryn Drever got the start in net for the Huskies and was quickly tested by the Thunderbirds as Grace Elliott picked up the first goal of the game for UBC at 7:48 Not to be outdone, the Huskies responded with a power play goal from Taylor Wilkinson, her first of the season. The first period ended in a 1 – 1 tie with the Huskies leading shots on goal 12-11.

The second period proved to be a defensive battle between the two teams until the end of the period when UBC's Ireland Perrott found the back of the net at 17:35. The defense was working hard for both teams as the second period ended with the Huskies leading shots on goal buy just two – 21-19, and UBC leading 2-1.

Heading into the third period, the Huskies were focused on offense, looking to put some points on the board. Midway through the period, Emily Holmes made her move and tied the game at 2-2. The Huskies continued their trend of pushing the limit and sent the game into overtime yet again. It took Kendra Zuchotzki on a power play at 3:13 to put an end to the game and give the Huskies the 3-2 OT win over the Thunderbirds.

Saturday night will see game two of the series at Merlis Belsher Place. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm and tickets can be watched on CanadaWest.TV.
