WSOC: Huskies add to Saskatchewan's Early Lead in the U-Prairie Challenge

REGINA – The USask Huskies headed down the highway Friday to take on the University of Regina Cougars in another U-Prairie Challenge match presented by SaskMilk. The Dogs dug their way to a 2-1 win capitalizing on their last opportunity to contribute to the regional rivalry challenge score.

The teams were evenly matched to start the game – showcasing some incredible defense. It was Cassidy Hayward, who finally found the back of the net in the 37th minute. With some help from Lethbridge, AB product Alyssa D'Agnone, Hayward put the Huskies on the board and in the lead going into the second half.

After regrouping at the half, the Regina Cougars put the heat on the Huskies with goal from Taylor Bubnick in the 71st minute. With assists from Sierra Kolodziej and Nicole Klassen, Bubnick's goal tied the game up at 1-1.

Nadia Kalyar got the start in net for the Huskies for the 11th time this season. Down the pitch, Allyson Ford started at goalkeeper for the Cougars.

Some true excitement came in the last few minutes of the game – starting with a Cougar foul. The Huskies went for the penalty kick and did not disappoint. Cheyenne Lehmann, first year out of Langdon, AB, was focused as she fired the ball home, bringing the Huskies to a 2-1 lead over the Cougars. Lehmann is having an outstanding rookie season with the Huskies, scoring her fifth goal for the green and white.

The Cougars would spend the last few minutes of the game trying to even the score with three shots on goal but were unsuccessful and the Huskies walked away the 2-1 win. This win brings the Huskies record to 7-2-3 for the season and bumps them to second place in the Prairie division of Canada West. The win also adds to the University of Saskatchewan's lead over the University of Regina in the U-Prairie Challenge presented by SaskMilk.

The Huskies will get back on the road, heading to Edmonton for a match up against the Alberta Pandas on October 15. With playoff play-ins scheduled for October 22, and the quarter finals starting October 29, the post-season is just around the corner. Live stream available on CanadaWest.TV.
