SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies held their home opener at Merlis Belsher Place this Friday. The Dogs took down the Dinos with a final overtime score of 2-1 for SK.
A defensive battle carried both teams through the first period and into the second with no score on the board. Veteran powerhouse,
Camryn Drever got the start in net for the Huskies racking up 23 saves on the night. Gabriella Durante got the start for Calgary on the other end of the ice.
The place heated up just 5 minutes into the second period when
Kate Ball gave the Huskies the first score of the night. The third year forward found the back of the net with an assist from Saskatoon's
Taylor Wilkinson.
Sydney Mercier took the lead away from the Huskies after sending one home for Elizabeth Lang with under 2 minutes left to play in the second.
Neither team were able to capitalize on the back-and-forth power play opportunities through the second and third periods. The 1-1 tie stuck with them through to the end of the third and sent them into overtime.
Kennedy Brown out of Okotoks AB., sealed the deal when she scored with an assist from
Kara Kondrat 4:25 into the overtime period.
The Huskies head coach,
Steve Kook had this to say about the takeaways from the home opener action – "We were inconsistent today. I think that when we're focused on offense, we're very good. But sometimes we forget about what happens on the other side of the equation. We did well when we kept the puck moving. However, when we stood around and we tried to make plays, I think that played into their advantage a little bit."
The Huskies are back in action 7PM Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place to carry on the double-header weekend presented by CO-OP. Tickets available at HuskieTickets.Com.
