WSOC: Huskies Fall to Spartans in Canada West Quarter-Final Match

FROM CANADA WEST:

LANGLEY, B.C. –
Trinity Western defeated Saskatchewan 3-0 in a Canada West bout at Chase Office Field. The conference All-Rookie duo of Charis Wardrope (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and Sophie Crowther (New Westminster, B.C.) combined for two of three goals.

Wardrope's two-goal performance combined with a marker from Charity Field (Burnaby, B.C.) to stand as the difference needed in TWU's quarter-final victory. For the Huskies, it was a standout performance from All-Rookie keeper Nadia Kalyar stood tall, stopping 10 of 12 shots faced in the loss.

Still, Crowther's performance stands as the most notable of the night, assisting on all three markers the Spartans potted.

AS IT HAPPENED
Crowther streaked down the middle of the field, finding Wardrope who tucked it into the back of the net in the 14th minute.

Wardrope and Crowther combined for a second time in the 28th minute. Crowther beat a defender on the right edge of the box, swinging a low driven ball to Wardrope who earned her second of the night.

Only one notable Huskies chance stood out in the first half as a Cassidy Hayward shot from distance nearly tested Miller.

TWU was able to hem the Huskies into their half for the remainder of the match as Field headed in a corner-kick from Crowther in the 85th minute to ice the game.

QUOTABLE
Graham Roxburgh – TWU Head Coach
"We looked really good, and we moved the ball really well. I thought Sierra [Halldorson] (Winnipeg) was tremendous in the midfield, and kept us steady. Makenna [Dieterich] (Langley, B.C.) played really well early, and so did Sophie. She got some really good crosses – and we know that Charis [Wardrope] can get on the end of those.

"I was super pleased because I think that team is good. If they're given a little bit of space and time on the ball, they can pick a deadly pass. We didn't give them much, and I thought we could've scored a couple more goals."

Jerson Barandica-Hamilton – Saskatchewan Head Coach
"We knew exactly what TWU was going to do – they like wide areas, and they like to cross the ball. For the most part, we did well. There were one or two chances they capitalized on, and as soon as you go down the momentum starts to change a bit. I think that was the story for tonight.

"We didn't give up a lot – which is what we wanted to do, but they did capitalize on one half-chance. I thought we needed to possess the ball a little longer in order to get higher up the field. Credit to them, they worked hard and deserved to win, but we're young, and these lessons are invaluable. We're closing the gap every year, and as a small program that's what we want to do. Disappointed with the loss at this stage, but I'm proud of the performance and how our team competed for 90 minutes."
