SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies took on the MacEwan Griffins in their home opener tonight at the PAC.
The first set saw a back and forth start with the Dogs up 7-6. The Huskies went on a big run to go up 18-10 and eventually winning the set 25-14. The Huskies had 9 kills in the first set to MacEwan's 7.
The second set saw the Dogs jump out to a quick 7-0 lead thanks to some solid serving by
Olivia Mattern. With the Huskies up 21-9 MacEwan found a bit of a groove scoring 5 straight before a Huskies timeout settled them down 25-17 set win.
The third set was back and forth with Griffins not willing to roll over to the Huskies. Fighting to a 14-9 lead the Huskies looked to be on their way to a straight set win, but MacEwan battled back to a 25-22 set win, forcing a fourth set.
The fourth set saw the Huskies find their groove again going up 7-3 early. The Griffins were unable to get anything going with the Huskies taking the fourth and deciding set 25-16.
The Huskies were led by Oliva Mattern with 12 Kills,
Averie Allard had 27 assists and Jessica Andjelic had 13 digs. The Griffins had 14 Kills from Mariah Bereziuk, Payton Shimoda had 29 assists and chipped in with 12 digs.
Head Coach
Mark Dodds was happy to pick up the win. "The first win always feels good and, I am glad that we got it there. Things definitely could have gone a bit smoother and we need to execute a little bit better on our side of the net. MacEwan forced us to play really well tonight."
