LETHBRIDGE – Closing out the Canada West season on a cold and wet fall afternoon, the Saskatchewan Huskies struck on a second half set piece to hand the Lethbridge Pronghorns a 1-0 loss.
With the win the Huskies finish the Canada West season with a 3-7-4 record and may hit the post-season, depending on the outcome of the MacEwan Griffins final two games. MacEwan faces the Calgary Dinos today and the Mount Royal Cougars tomorrow in Calgary.
Lukie Mackie scored the lone goal in the 71
st minute, while Huskie keeper
Jaron Slopinski only need to make one save to earn the clean sheet.
Pronghorn keeper Armaan Thawer made seven saves in the loss, including two spectacular saves in the second half.
Playing with the wind in the opening half, the Huskies pushed into the Pronghorn side of the field early but were unable to generate any shots in the opening 15 minutes of action, thanks to a strong defensive structure from the Pronghorns backline.
While the Huskies held a good portion of the possession, the Pronghorns did have two free kicks deep in Huskie territory during the opening part of the game but were not able to take advantage of those opportunities.
Off a corner in the 24
th minute, the Pronghorns did have a dangerous look. Will Hughes swung a good-looking ball into the Huskie penalty area and chaos ensued, but the Pronghorns could not get a shot through the Huskie defense.
Coming back with some pressure of their own,
Kuhle Bekwayo had a good look from 12 yards out, but his shot was blocked by a Pronghorn defender and into touch for a fourth corner of the half.
At the half, the Huskies held a 10-2 shot attempt advantage with the Huskies hitting the net twice and Pronghorns once.
Now playing with the wind at their back in the second half, the Pronghorns opened the second half with some early possession on the Huskie side of the field, however it was short lived.
Off a set piece from just outside the Pronghorns penalty area,
Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei lasered a shot to the far post but Pronghorn keeper Armaan Thawer made a specular diving save to keep the Huskies off the board.
Pushing back, Danilo Morales had two dangerously looking runs with the first deflecting off a Huskie defender and a challenging Huskie keeper

st minute the Huskies finally took advantage.
Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei's ball into the box and found Lukie Mackie to head home his second of the season to open the scoring. The goal turned out to be all the Huskies would need.
The Huskies will now turn to the TV in hopes of returning to the playoffs after missing out on the postseason last year.
