SASKATOON, SK – It was a Saturday night clash between two historic rivals, the Saskatchewan Huskies and the Alberta Golden Bears.
It did not take long for tempers to flair in the second night of a back-to-back as Bruce MacGregor leveled
Carter Stebbings from behind just six minutes into the contest for a 2-minute boarding penalty. Three other players would head to the box on the play as both Jakin Smallwood and
Alec Zawatsky got 2-minute penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct respectively, while
Evan Fiala got two himself for cross checking during the post whistle dramatics.
The rest of the first period would be back and forth with both teams struggling to get pucks on net with the Huskies having the slight edge in shots at 7-6.
The second period was slow to develop until
Jared Dmytriw got a gift in the slot on an Alberta turnover and fired it home for his eighth goal of the season midway through the period.
With just under three minutes remaining in the second period, an elbow from Ryan Hughes took down
Roddy Ross after the whistle. Hughes would go to the box for 2-mintues for elbowing and a 10-minute misconduct. The Huskies again would fail to capitalize on the man advantage.
In the third period, Alberta's Smallwood found the loose puck out front and slid it past Ross to tie it for the Golden Bears just over 6-minutes into the frame.
Thirty seconds later, the Huskies would head back to the man advantage when Dawson Davidson hit
Mark Rumsey from behind. Davidson would go off for 2-minutes for checking from behind and a 10-minute misconduct. Again, the Huskies could not beat Ethan Kruger in the Alberta net.
With just under 9-minutes remaining in the third
Liam Keeler went off for a for a slew foot giving the Golden Bears a 4-minute power play. The Huskies stood tall killing the first two minutes off before Justin Hall for the Bears went off for interference to bring it to four on four.
That would be it for excitement in regulation as the three periods were not enough and an extra frame would be needed.
It was a minute into the overtime period when Alberta's Tyler Preziuso put home the game winner to give the Golden Bears the overtime win.
Roddy Ross stopped 24/26 on the night while Kruger for the Bears stopped 24/25.
Saskatchewan's
Brandin Cote was impressed with his team's effort in the loss. "We took three out of four points against them, and we are pretty proud of that. We did a lot of good things this weekend and I thought we carried the play against a really good team."
The Huskies are off next weekend before having a home and home against the Regina Cougars on November 4
th in Regina and 5
