LANGLEY, B.C. – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies fell 2-1 to the Trinity Western Spartans in the season opener Friday night in Langley.
The 1st period opened with both teams going back and forth trading chances. Both were given a chance on the power play in the opening period but were unable to capitalize.
Camryn Drever and the Dogs were able to deny the Spartans and hold an empty tie after the first.
Early in the second period the Huskies found their chance.
Mallory Dyer stole the puck along the wall, cut to the net and put a back hand shot home to give the Huskies the lead.
Trinity Western would battle back late in the period when Kyra McDonald scored to tie it up with a minute and a half remaining in the period.
The third period was a back-and-forth affair with both teams looking to seal the win in regulation for their team. With just over a minute left it looked like the game was destined for the extra frame when McKenzie Mayo closed out the defensive battle – scoring for the Spartans giving them the lead for good.
Camryn Drever got the start in net for the Huskies. The Huskie veteran stopped 22 of 24 shots on the night. Down the ice, Mabel Maltais stopped 28 of 29 between the pipes as the starting goalkeeper for the Spartans.
