MHKY: Dmytriw Leads Dogs to a Comeback Win

SASKATOON – The second night of the back-to-back in Saskatoon proved to delight as the action-packed showdown shook Merlis Belsher Place. The Saskatchewan Huskies took on the Trinity Western Spartans and closed the weekend with a clean sweep after a double overtime 6-5 win.

TWU broke the ice early with Michael Spafford scoring just 3:23 into the game. The Spartans did not stop there – potting another one just two and a half minutes later.

Craven Saskatchewan's own, Jared Dmytriw, responded for the Huskies scoring 30 seconds after the Spartans second to cut the lead in half.

Momentum for the Dogs did not last long as the Spartans found the back of the net twice more in the final six minutes of the opening frame. This left the Huskies trailing 4-1 into the second period.

To start the second the Huskies made a change in net with Declan Hobbs coming into the game for the first time in his U SPORTS career.

Trinity Western would go on to score 5:45 into the second period to extend the lead to 5-1 – Jared Dmytriw helped to keep the Huskies in the contest when he put his second of the night home and closing out the second.

The third period started the Huskies way when Alec Zawatsky fired one home from the slot to cut the lead down to two for the Spartans. Followed shortly with the third-year Dog, Dmytriw, finished up the hat trick to bring them within one.

With only 2:59 remaining in the game, Gunner Kinniburgh completed the Huskies comeback firing the puck over Labelle for his first of the season!

That was it for regulation excitement as the two teams went on to battle it out in overtime. The first overtime had both teams trading chances but neither team could find the back of the net.

The second overtime period started with the Spartans on a two on one, but the pass went just wide and slide out of danger for the Huskies. USask went back the other way shortly after and Keeler couldn't beat Labelle on the one timer.

Saskatoon's own, Jaxan Kaluski, ended the night with 1:16 remaining in the second overtime to give the Huskies the a comeback win – after being down 5-1 early in the second period.

Jordan Kooy got the start for the Huskies stopping 4/8 before he was pulled in favour of the second-year Huskie, Declan Hobbs. Hobbs stopped in the effort 23/24. Down the ice, Isaac Labelle, got the start in net for the Spartans. The once Saskatoon Contact stopped 50/56 for the night.

The Huskies confidence never wavered. After the game, tonight's standout Dmytriw said "We didn't get away from it and we knew it was going to go our way eventually, and we just kept pushing them."

The Huskies are on the road to meet up with the Dinos next weekend. Puck drops in Calgary at 7:00 PM Friday. Livestream of the match available on CanadaWest.TV.
