Five Huskies named to East-West Bowl roster

SASKATOON – Fresh off a Canadian Football League (CFL) draft that saw three members of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team taken - including Nelson Lokombo being chosen with the second pick on the night - more good news came for Huskies looking to take the next step to playing professional football as five were named to the 2022 East-West Bowl roster.

FULL RELEASE

While the annual contest has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nathan Cherry, Adam Machart, Charlie Ringland, David Solie and Noah Zerr have all cemented themselves among the top U SPORTS prospects for the 2022 CFL Draft by earning spots on the roster. The roster recognitions celebrate the next generation of top Canadian football prospects, with 110 U SPORTS-eligible standouts identified for the 2022 CFL Draft.

Cherry, a fourth-year business student, took over a starting spot on the Huskies' defensive line in 2019 and racked up 6.5 tackles and 3.5 sacks in eight regular season games.

The reigning Canada West Player of the Year, Machart had one of the best seasons in program history in 2019. A running back, Machart led the nation by rushing for 1334 yards, averaging 166.8 yards-per-game in the regular season. The product of Saskatoon recorded 11 touchdowns, eight on the ground and three through the air. Machart set new program season records for both rushing yards (1334) and all-purpose yards (1534).

Originally from Winnipeg,  Ringland has been an impact defensive back since joining the Huskies in 2018. 2019 saw the arts & science student compile 28 tackles while also forcing a fumble and recording an interception.

A kicker/punter from Saskatoon, Solie joined the Huskies for the 2019 season after a successful junior football career with the Saskatoon Hilltops. Connecting on 16 of 19 field goal attempts during the season, Solie put his name third in the program record book with a season field goal percentage of 84.2.

Rounding out the Huskies named to the roster is Zerr. A kinesiology student from Langenburg, Sask. Zerr was a key part of one of the most dominant offensive lines in program history in 2019, helping pave the way for the top rushing attack in the nation on a Huskies' offence that averaged a conference best 32.1 points-per-game.

Team West is mostly made up of players from Canada West (CW) and Ontario University Athletics (OUA) schools, except Carleton, Ottawa and Queen's, which are named to the East squad. The rest of Team East features players from Atlantic University Sport (AUS) and Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) schools.
