Machart among five Huskies honoured with All-Canadian status

QUEBEC CITY - For the fifth-time in program history, five Huskies were earned All-Canadian status, as Adam Machart, Noah Zerr, Connor Berglof, Nathan Cherry and David Solie were named U SPORTS All-Canadians at the annual Vanier Cup gala.

The honours were announced in conjunction with unveiling of the U SPORTS major award winners on Thursday night.

Machart, Zerr, Cherry and Solie were all named First-Team All-Canadians, while Berglof, who was named a First-Team All-Canadian in 2019, earned the second All-Canadian nod of his Huskies career.

The nod for Machart makes back-to-back seasons he was named a First-Team All-Canadian. The Uteck Bowl Offensive Player of the Game got it done both on the ground and through the air throughout the regular-season, finishing sixth in the county in all-purposed yards-per-game. Machart's 83 rushing yards-per-game finished second in the Canada West and he was once again the focal point of one of the nation's best offences.

Helping pave the way for Machart through the season were Zerr and Berglof. Zerr, who was ranked 20th in the CFL Scouting Bureau's first edition of rankings for the 2022 CFL Draft, earned the first All-Canadian nod of his Huskies career. The left tackle helped keep Mason Nyhus clean in the pocket, who was sacked just four times during the regular-season.

Meanwhile, as mentioned Berglof earned the second All-Canadian nod of his Huskies career. The 2021 third-round selection of the Ottawa Redblacks lined up at centre and guard for the Huskies and was a mauler in the ground game, leading the way for a Saskatchewan offence that ranked first in the country in yards-per-carry.

On the defensive line, it was a breakout season for Nathan Cherry. The Aden Bowman Collegiate product finished in a tie for third in the country with 5.5 sacks helping him earn a national honour for the first-time in his career. The fourth-year linemen also chipped in 13.5 total tackles in his six games this season.

Averaging 43.4 yards-per-punt, David Solie was the nation's best punter. The Holy Cross graduate earned the first All-Canadian nod of his career in his second season as the starting punter for the Huskies. Solie's ability to flip field position was evident throughout the year. His 77-yard punt in week-one against the Dinos also stood up as the second-longest recorded punt in the country this season. However, not only was Solie notorious for his big-leg, he also finished tied for third in the country and led the Canada West in punts placed inside the 20-yard-line, routinely forcing the opposition to have to drive the length of the field.

The Scotiabank Vanier Cup, presented by Levio is Saturday at 1 pm ET / 10 am PT on CBC TV and TVA Sports. Live streaming of the match-up between the Saskatchewan Huskies and Western Mustangs is also available on the CBC's digital platforms (CBC GemCBCSports.ca, and the CBC Sports app) and on TVASports.ca with a valid subscription.
