Two First Period Goals Lift Huskies Past Spartans

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Saskatchewan Huskies earned a road split against the Trinity Western Spartans with a 2-0 win Saturday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The Spartans had won the weekend opener 1-0 in overtime Friday night at the George Preston Arena. The loss drops TWU to 1-5-0-0 on the season, while the win moves Saskatchewan to 3-1-2.

The Huskies Kelsey Hall, (Lloydminster, AB) with the assist to Larissa Bohlken (Moose Jaw, SK), opened the scoring at 5:48 to give Saskatchewan their first goal against Trinity Western. Saskatchewan's Mallory Dyer (Calgary), with assist to Sophie Lalor (Penticton, B.C.), made it 2-0 for the visiting Huskies at the 14:31 mark of the opening period.

TWU pulled their goalie late in the third period and created a number of chances, but were unable to find the back of the net as Saskatchewan earned the two goal victory.

NOTABLE

  • The Spartans Mabel Maltais (Edmonton) made 28 saves in the loss, while the Huskies Camryn Drever (Edmonton) made 27 saves to get the shutout victory.
  • The Huskies finished the night with a 30 –27 edge in shots over the Spartans.
  • TWU had a solid performance on the penalty kill. The Spartans held the Huskies of the scoresheet to keep them 0-5 on the power play. The Spartans finished 0-3 on the power play.
  • In Friday's game TWU outshot Saskatchewan 32-31.

NEXT UP After a week off the Huskies will be back home at Merlis Belsher Place on November 19 at 7 PM against the Calgary Dinos.
