SASKATOON - Colby Wilson recorded her first-career U SPORTS shutout, while Emily Holmes scored her first-career U SPORTS goal, helping the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team pick up a 2-0 win over the Calgary Dinos at Merlis Belsher Place.
"I think that was a really good team win on our end," said Holmes. "We worked hard this week and it sure paid off."
Two third-period goals, including Holmes' go-ahead marker at the midway point of the frame were the difference in a neck-and-neck contest that saw goals disallowed for both sides.
While Holmes' first-career goal in the green-and-white may not have been the prettiest — as it came off a wrister from the Huskies side of the red line — she isn't going to be complaining anytime soon.
"Obviously everyone's first goal in this league is pretty important to them and it feels good to get off my chest. I'm excited to see where I go with it," said Holmes.Â
"My sister (Huskies forward Jordyn Holmes) was actually the first one who grabbed me. So that was a special moment between us."
Abby Shirley added an insurance marker late in the third, as she crashed hard to the net, and followed up a Bailee Bourassa wrister. Bourassa, who was named to the Team Canada's women's hockey roster for the 2021 FISU Winter Games earlier this week, registered her first point of the season with the assist.
Saskatchewan improves to 4-1-2 on the yer with the win, while Calgary falls to 3-6-0.
As mentioned, Wilson stopped everything in the win, recording 22-saves to improve her record to 1-0-1 this season, earning high-praise from her head coach in the process.
"I'm happy for her," said Kook. "Really good for Colby. That'll be a big confidence boost for her, especially coming in as a first year, just knowing that she can play in big games like this and under pressure."
On the opposite side of the ice, Gabriella Durante made 23 saves for the Dinos.
Despite the Huskies power play continuing to struggle after an 0-6 night on the man-advantage, Kook believes the contest was a step in the right direction.
"I thought the power play was good tonight," said Kook. "I thought the power play did the right things. I thought the looks were really good. I thought we got way more pucks on net. I thought we had chances for second rebounds and you just got to keep doing the same thing."
Kook and the Huskies will hope the powerplay starts to click on Saturday, as they duel the Dinos for the second-time in as many nights. They will look for their third-straight win and the series sweep.
"Sweeps are hard, but if we can get a sweep on the weekend, that'll put us up there in a real good standing, especially when we play teams like Calgary and BC that are real tight in points for us," said Kook.
