SASKATOON - Two power play goals from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team helped lift the team to a 4-2 victory over the visiting University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at Merlis Belsher Place.
Jordyn Holmes had a goal and an assist, while Isabella Pozzi, Kennedy Brown and Abby Shirley all also found the back of the net, helping lead Saskatchewan to their fourth-straight win.
Coach Steve Kook was pleased with the Huskies man-advantage on the night, as they went 2-for-5 on the powerplay.
"When they players are on a roll, I think the thing that us coaches can for them is just don't coach them, let them see what they see and let them shoot," said Kook. "The coaching staff just tried to reinforce with video that the reads were good and to keep shooting the puck early."
After a scoreless first period, both sides regrouped and lit the lamp in the second frame. The T-Birds struck first with a goal from Sophia Gaskell early in the period. Pozzi then nabbed her first goal of the season off of a shot from the point.Â
On Pozzi's play, Kook said, "I thought she moved the puck well, I thought she won races, it was a tough physical game tonight, and Isabella isn't the biggest defenseman out there, but she took on the battle. And that shot is what we've been seeing from her all year long."
Brown then scored on a 5-on-3 powerplay to give the Huskies the 2-1 lead. UBC's Mackenzie Kordic responded shortly after to tie it up. The tie was short-lived as Holmes tucked one past T-Birds goalie Elise Hugens.
In the third period, Shirley notched her fourth goal in three games on the powerplay to solidify the Huskies win. Bailee Bourassa and Kate Ball assisted tonight's goal as well as Shirley's previous three goals.
"I'm in the right spot and people are feeding me nice passes. So I can't take all the credit. My line mates are doing just as much work as I am. I think last weekend, seeing the points come, I think it really built our confidence which was huge," said Shirley.
"I think Abby, Bailee, and Kate know that when they're on the ice and they're doing what they do, they're really hard to stop. I have lots of confidence in their abilities at both ends of the ice," said Kook.
The Huskies will look for the series sweep over the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday night at 7 PM back at Merlis Belsher Place.
