SASKATOON - An offensive outburst from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team helped them pick-up an 8-1 over the Calgary Dinos at Merlis Belsher Place.
After a 2-0 win on Friday night, the Huskies closed out on the series sweep with the convincing win to climb to 5-1-2 and into a tie for third in the Canada West with 12 points.Â
With the victory, the Huskies continued their dominance over the Dinos. They haven't lost to their counterpart from Calgary since Jan. 14, 2017.
Saskatchewan's win came in a dominant fashion, as they scored seven goals for the first-time since Dec. 3, 2011.
Camryn Drever stopped 25 of 26 shots she faced in the win, which includes numerous breakaway stops throughout the night in what was perhaps her strongest start of the season.
"Camryn was a star for us and the players recognized that. They gave her the player of the game too," said Kook.Â
It was a big night for a trio of Huskies in particular, as Abby Shirley, Kendra Zuchotzki and Sophie Lalor all recorded two goals in the win.Â
Zuchotzki had a night to remember, scoring her first-career U SPORTS goal, and adding her second of her career later in the night on an absolute bomb on the power play.Â
"It's amazing, honestly," said Zuchotzki, when asked about the milestone. "I've been just waiting to get my first goal. Like I knew it was coming and I was just like waiting for the right moment."
"She's one of the few in this league that can shoot like that. And that's why she's in that position on the power play," said Kook. "When you have a shot like that? Why pass it anywhere else?"
Zuchotzki's power play tally was just one of five on the evening for the Dogs with the man-advantage. Saskatchewan's powerplay had struggled all season, entering the night 1-37, but the breakout was something that pleased Kook.
After scoring the insurance marker for the Huskies in last night's win, Shirley opened the scoring tonight, before adding another in the second period, to give the fourth-year four points on the season.
"You see you're out there, she's such a skilled player. She does so well at finding holes and I'm just glad it paid off for her tonight."
Also finding twine on the night was Bailee Bourassa, who finally got her first of the season.
"That was a long time coming for me. It definitely felt good to get the monkey off the back. I didn't know what the goal was going to look like, but I knew it needed to happen this weekend and it was just such a relief," said Bourassa.
Up next for the Huskies is a pair of matchups against two of the conference's best in the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend, before closing their calendar year in Calgary for a pair of matchups against the Mount Royal Cougars.
"We have the top-two teams coming up in these next two weekends and going into the Christmas break, it's huge for us to have a sweep like this," said Bourassa.
Meanwhile, for the visitors, Alli Borrow scored the lone goal of the evening — her fourth of the season. The Dinos fell to 3-7-0 with the loss and now sit in a tie for seventh in the conference with six points.
Calgary will look to get back in the win column next weekend, as they get set to play host to the Regina Cougars in their final weekend of action 2021.
