After a week-long bye, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies are back in action this weekend at Merlis Belsher Place.
The Huskies return home after picking up three of a possible four points on their west coast road swing.
Now that they're home, they're home to stay. Saskatchewan will play their next four games at Merlis Belsher Place, providing a prime-opportunity to make a move up the Canada West standings.Â
The Huskies currently sit in a tie for fourth in the conference with eight points this season, but nipping at their heels are three teams who all enter the weekend trailing Saskatchewan (3-1-2) by just two points, including the Calgary Dinos (3-5-0).
However, the Huskies are hoping their past success against the Dinos will carry over into this weekend.Â
Saskatchewan has a 12-0-0 record in their last 12 meetings against Calgary, who have not won against the green-and-white since the 2016-17 season. The Dinos will be searching for their first win in program history at Merlis Belsher Place this weekend.
The Huskies will be relying on continued production from Mallory Dyer and Sophie Lalor, who lead the team with four points this season.
While eight different Huskies have found the back of the net this season, none are Bailee Bourassa. It feels like only a matter of time before the Weyburn, Sask. product breaks through and this weekend is a golden opportunity for that — she had seven points in four games against the Dinos in 2018-19.Â
Bourassa was one of six Canada West players to be named Team Canada's women's hockey squad at the FISU Winter Universiade, which will be held from December 11-21 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
But prior to jetting off to Europe, Bourassa will be looking to lead Saskatchewan, who looks to close the 2021 calendar year in style.
Scouting the Dinos:
- Calgary product Carla MacLeod is in her first-year as the head coach of the Dinos program.Â
- The former Canadian Women's National Team blue liner takes over the job from Danielle Goyette, who was hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the offseason.Â
- Prior to the Dinos, MacLeod was the head coach of Edge School, a private school in Calgary that competes in the CSSHL.Â
- Current Huskie Mallory Dyer was coached by MacLeod at Edge.Â
- Calgary's Bridget Rezansoff, Dana Wood, Sydney Mercier and Kate Wagner are all Saskatoon products, with Rezansoff, Wood and Mercier all starring for the Saskatoon Stars (SMFAAAHL).Â
- Rezansoff, Wood and Wagner could all play their first U SPORTS games in their hometowns this weekend.Â
- Holly Reuther will be the player to watch for the Huskies, as she enters the weekend tied for sixth in scoring in the Canada West with seven points in eight games.
- Reuther is currently on a five-game point streak, tied for longest active streak in the conference, with four goals and two assists in that span.
