CALGARY – Jared Dmytriw's goal 30 seconds into the second overtime propelled the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 2-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena
The Huskies outshot the Dinos throughout the game and they had plenty of chances, including a four-minute power play in overtime. Calgary goaltender Brodan Salmond came up strong for his team and it wasn't until the fifth period that Saskatchewan was able to beat him for the second time.
Saskatchewan remains undefeated on the season with a 7-0 record, while Calgary drops to 5-3-1.
"You've got to play fast, you've got to play hard. A lot of our guys paid a price, I thought Salmond played really well," Calgary head coach Mark Howell commented. "We pushed and we played hard, but close isn't good enough."
The Dinos opened the scoring at 6:30 of the second period as Kaden Elder accepted a pass from Ryan Gagnon on the power play and fired a wrist shot past a screened Roddy Ross from the hash marks.
The Huskies responded five minutes later, with Ty Prefontaine tying it up. It was the last goal scored until Dmytriw's overtime winner.
Saskatchewan outshot the Dinos 41-26. Ross took the win with 25 saves, while Salmond denied 39 attempts.
The Dinos and Huskies will return to the ice at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday night for the rematch at 7 p.m.
