After opening the scoring in the 35th minute, the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team commanded the lead the rest of the way, as they defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 4-1 at Griffiths Stadium
Gareth Smith-Doyle scored twice for the Dinos, with Kundai Dziwa and Gabriel Craiovan each adding on goals in the second-half in the win.
Ajani Fontaine's marker in the late stages of the match got Saskatchewan on the board, standing as the lone goal for the green-and-white on the night.
The win was a big one for the Dinos as they improved their record to 3-0-2 and leapfrogged the Huskies in the central division standings.Â
"I think every single time we come here, it's always a challenge. We knew that to get the three points we were really gonna have to grind and scrape through it," said Dinos strength and conditioning coach Taylor Evernden.Â
"Coming to Sask is never an easy feat, but the boys banded together and we stuck to our game plan and I think it paid off for us."
After Saskatchewan entered the weekend with a 3-1-0 record and on top of their division, they recorded their second loss of the 2021 season, settling in behind Calgary.
The Dinos icebreaker in the 36th minute, paired with an insurance marker in the 43rd - both of which coming off the foot of Smith-Doyle - were instrumental.
But Saskatchewan appeared to have got one back in the late stages of the first half, as Robert Mackay blasted a ball past Jake Ruschowski, but the goal was later taken off the board with the referee blowing the play dead after a Dinos head injury in the midst of the play.
The disallowed goal proved pivotal. Calgary later added an insurance marker, which was all they needed to ensure three-points in a pivotal win on the road.
Despite the scoreline, Huskies head coach Bryce Chapman was pleased with the way his side performed.
"I couldn't be more proud of the guys and the way they battled for the entire 90 minutes and got one goal in the last bit there. We'll focus on the positives and make sure we're ready for tomorrow's match," said Chapman.
As Chapman alluded to, the two clubs will take the pitch for the second-time in as many nights on Saturday, with kickoff slated for 5:00 p.m. at Griffiths Stadium.
