Final Four bound: Huskies punch ticket with win in penalty kick thriller

Goalkeeper Jadyn Steinhauer played hero as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team defeated the Calgary Dinos in penalty kicks in the Canada West quarter-final on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium.

"This is our night. This is a special night. The girls made it happen," said Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica-Hamitlon.

After a scoreless 120 minutes, it took penalty kicks to provide an answer - an answer Steinhauer almost single-handedly gave, stopping three of the five Dinos attempts from the spot en route to a Huskies win.

"That's Jaydn Steinhauer in a nutshell," said Barandica-Hamitlon. "She made three saves on penalties. I've never seen that happen. What an unbelievable performance. We're just so happy, so grateful to have her. Tonight was for her and she fully earned that game."

"She is the heart and soul of our team. We would not be anywhere near here without her. I can't talk highly enough about her," said Huskies forward Maya Gabruch, when asked about her goalkeeper.

Gabruch, Haley Mercier and Jade Houmphanh all found the back of the net from the spot for Saskatchewan.

Gabruch, a fifth-year senior from Saskatoon, was playing in her final match as a Huskie on home field and she made the most of it.

"I'm just super happy right now. Like we've been working towards this all season. In the past we've lost out in the quarter-final and this year we did it. I'm just over the moon right now," said Gabruch.

As Gabruch alluded to, Saskatchewan had fell in three-consecutive Canada West quarter-final matches, but tonight was different. The Huskies are set to appear in the fourth Final Four in program history. The victory also continues Saskatchewan's pursuit of a second U SPORTS National Championship appearance in program history, with their lone appearance coming back in 2016.

At the opposite end of the pitch, the loss spelled the end to the season for the defending Canada West champion Calgary Dinos, who were fresh off a 9-2-1 regular season and second-place finish in the Central Division.

"I'm super disappointed for us obviously. It stings because we have some quality and I thought we showed that for big chunks of the game today," said Dinos head coach Troye Flannery.

"The Huskies fed off that home crowd who did a good job. I'm happy for Jerson and his program. He does fantastic things here."

Up next for Saskatchewan? That aforementioned trip to the Canada West Final Four. But the destination remains undecided. As it stands, the UBC Thunderbirds would be set to host, but the MacEwan Griffins and Trinity Western Spartans still remain to play - if either win, they would play host. Should both win, a trip to Langley is in store for the Huskies.

"I'm so excited. I think we're ready. I think we're going to do great again. I think we're going to go all the way to Nationals, " said Steinhauer.
