It's safe to say a weekend sweep over your provincial rival goes down as a successful opening-weekend.

But now it's time to build upon it.

Saskatchewan continues their three-game homestead this weekend, as they welcome the Manitoba Bisons to town for a two-game series.

The Huskies looked strong on opening weekend, following up a 3-2 win in Regina with a 3-2 victory in their home-opener on Saturday night. The team got back-to-back wins from Camryn Drever between the pipes, while Kennedy Brown led the way offensively with a goal and two assists, earning her Canada West Player of the Week.

This weekend will be a good test for Saskatchewan, with the Bisons coming to town with a 3-1-0 record.

Manitoba split this past weekend against the UBC Thunderbirds, recording a 3-2 win and 5-1 loss. The Bisons are tied for second-place in the conference alongside the Thunderbirds, trailing only the first-place Mount Royal Cougars by one-point.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan is tied for fourth in the conference with four points. However, the Huskies are only one of two teams with only two games this season.

The Huskies hold a 6-6 record over their last five-seasons against the Bisons, also splitting last years series 2-2. With the two teams not meeting again until the final week of the regular-season in Winnipeg, Saskatchewan will look to get a head-start on this years season-series with a pair of wins on home ice.

With the Huskies and Bisons entering the season ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the Canada West preseason coaches poll, it figures to be a neck-and-neck weekend series.

Quotables:

Steve Kook on his young team's first weekend of the season:

"The defense are growing leaps and bounds just by fire here. They're right in the fire. That's where these rookies grow is stressful situations like that, where you're putting them in positions of trust and they perform. So I'm real excited how they're going to come out of this weekend."

5 Things:

  1. Mallory Dyer has made an instant impact with Saskatchewan. The first-year defensemen has three assists through two games to tie for the team-lead in points thus far this season.
