For the second-straight night, the University of Saskatchewan women's soccer team was dominant throughout, as they recorded a 6-0 win over the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen.
After the Huskies picked up a convincing 5-0 win on Friday night, the home side failed to skip a beat improving their record to 6-1-1, with notable performances up-and-down the lineup leading the way.
"I loved the contributions from everyone," said Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica-Hamilton. "We've never had this depth and having the opportunity to rest players and not drop our performance is just so exciting to see."
Maya Gabruch led the way for Saskatchewan with a brace, recording her 18th and 19th career goals in the green-and-white. Naleya Kobussen also continued her tremendous 2021 campaign as she found the back of the net in the late stages of the match to record her third marker of the weekend.
But as Barandica-Hamilton alluded to, it was the performances from players such as Anna Oliver, who registered her first-career U SPORTS goal, and Marie Kilcher, Hannah Zdunich-Costa and Madi Epoch who all found their way onto the score-sheet.
While the six-point weekend was significant for Saskatchewan, perhaps more important to Barandica-Hamilton is the form his team is rounding into as they near their way towards their ninth-consecutive Canada West postseason appearance.
"What I loved the most is just the performance from our team from start-to-finish. We never became complacent," said Barandica-Hamilton.
That was evident in analyzing the box score, with the Huskies out-shooting the Wesmen 15-3 on the evening and 29-6 over the course of the two matches.
While Winnipeg fell to 0-6-2 with the defeat, one bright spot for the visitors had to have been goalkeeper Taryn Raabe, who stood tall throughout the weekend, making numerous point-blank saves to keep her team hanging around.
At the opposite end of the pitch, Saskatchewan goalkeeper Jadyn Steinhauer stopped everything fired her way for the second consecutive evening, as she recorded the clean sheet in the win.
The Huskies will enjoy the division-wide bye-week, before getting back in action the following weekend in Winnipeg, as they square-up with the Manitoba Bisons for a pair of matches that figure to have significant playoff implications.
"I think the bye gives us an opportunity to review where we are, what we need to continue to get better at and get a little bit of a break to rest up our bodies and make hopefully a long run and peak at the right time, which I think this team is starting to do," said Barandica-Hamilton.
"It's exciting for fans to come out and watch. These girls are playing some phenomenal soccer and it doesn't get better than this."
The final time the Saskatchewan faithful will have the opportunity to watch the Huskies at home will be on the final day of conference regular season-play, which comes on Oct. 24 with the Regina Cougars coming to town for the second half of the back-to-back.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg will look to reset and use the bye-week to their advantage, before they get back in action with the Regina Cougars with a pair of matches on Oct. 16 and 17 in Winnipeg, as they fight to keep their postseason aspirations alive.
