SASKATOON – The MacEwan Griffins came up clutch when they needed to in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23,25-23) win over the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on Jan. 4.
For MacEwan the win was monumental. As they broke a ten game skid, getting back into the win column for the first time since their opening game of the season all the way back on Oct 18.
Saskatchewan falls to 7-7 after splitting the weekend with the Griffins.
The game was almost a mirror image from last night with the two teams battling it out throughout the entire set before one squad took control late.
This time around it was the Griffin's turn to come out on the winning end, buoyed by a .259 hitting percentage and 12-8 advantage in blocking.
Max Vriend led the way for MacEwan, recording 12 kills on his 24 attacks with middle Mark Alexander adding 10 of his own.
Daulton Sinoski and
Connor Murray were the main attackers for Saskatchewan, recording 16 and 11 kills respectively.
Vriend and Alexander came out swinging in the first set, combining for 12 kills as the Griffins hit .323 as a team en route to the 25-23 set victory.
The Griffins continued that momentum into the second set, jumping out to an early lead and carrying it all the way to a 19-15 advantage before the Huskies fought back. Murray had four kills during an 8-5 Huskies' run but Vriend put the set away with a big swing to give the Griffins the 25-23 victory.
A back-and-forth third set also went the way of the Griffins.
With the score all knotted up at 20 apiece Mark Alexander recorded a kill and a block and the visitors took advantage of some Saskatchewan mistakes to clinch the match.
Saskatchewan will be on a bye next week before returning to the PAC to host the Winnipeg Wesmen while MacEwan will head back to Edmonton where they will host the UBC Thunderbirds.
