SASKATOON – A total of eight first-place finishes and 17 medals was the result of a strong all-around effort from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies track & field teams at the inaugural Sanderson Classic inside the Saskatoon Field House
FULL RESULTS
Michelle Harrison (60-metres),
Courtney Hufsmith (1000-metres),
Josh Websdale (pole vault),
Michael Akintunde (long jump) and
Carter Cheveldayoff (weight throw) as well as the women's 4x200- and 4x800-metre relay and men's 4x400-metre relay teams all captured gold medals for the Huskies.
Harrison, who played large part in the Huskies finishing second in the nation last season, started her 2020 season off strongly by winning the 60-metre and leading off the 4x200-metre relay team that claimed gold. Alongside
Ashlyn Mooney,
Kendra Farmer, and
Leadan Chartier that relay team is currently ranked second in the nation.
For the rookie Akintunde, his jump of 7.06 metres did more than just put him atop the podium, that distance also moves him into fifth in the national rankings and a tie for tenth on the Huskies all-time list.
Facing tough competition from elite club athletes as well as Canada West teams in the form of the Alberta Golden Bears & Pandas, Calgary Dinos, Regina Cougars and Trinity Western Spartans allowed the Huskies to not only begin to post qualifying times and distances for Canada West and U SPORTS championships, but to also gauge where they stand against some of the top athletes in the nation.
Next up for the Huskies is a trip to Edmonton for the Golden Bear Open January 17-18. The Canada West championship will take place in Saskatoon and is set for February 21-22.
