HUSKIES WIN FIRST-EVER CANADA WEST CHAMPIONSHIP

With a comeback 4-2 victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears, the No. 4 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskie men's soccer team was crowned Canada West Champion for the first time in history.

Down 2-1 at halftime, the Huskies scored in the 64th, 81st and 86th minutes to capture Huskie Athletics' 101st Canada West Championship banner.

Bobbi Nicholat scored the tying goal in the 64th minute after midfielder Mitch Bauche made a quick pass through the middle. Nicholat's shot slid by rookie keeper Connor James and into the bottom right corner of the net.

Saskatchewan was able to extend its lead in the 81st minute when Huskie captain Jordian Farahani got a head on a Brett Levis corner kick. David Brown converted on a penalty kick for the insurance goal in the 86thminute.

The Golden Bears had opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Jermele Campbell was sent in by Tyler Graham. The Huskies backline couldn't get back in time to stop Campbell's shot that sailed into the top left corner.

Seven minutes later a long Farahani free kick curled into the top corner to tie the match at one in the 27thminute.

But once again Alberta found the net in the 36th minute to take the lead into halftime on a Niko Jonkovic goal. Jonkovic ended up with the ball on a scramble in front of the net and converted on a quick turn.

James was strong in net for the Golden Bears making six saves in the loss. Once again, the Huskies outshot its opponent with 10 shots on goal.

Both Saskatchewan and Alberta advance to the CIS Championship next week hosted by the UPEI Panthers. The CIS Championship is slated to begin Thursday, November 6.
