SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's volleyball team will be making their first post-season appearance since 2015-16, when they travel West to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal Cougars in a rematch of the final weekend of regular season action.
Â
The Huskies swept the Cougars this past weekend at the PAC, which qualified Saskatchewan in fifth spot in the conference. Saskatchewan is hoping they are peaking at the right time as they enter the playoffs in the midst of a three-game winning streak.
Â
Meanwhile, Mount Royal enters the post-season on a two-game losing skid following their series against Saskatchewan. They entered the final weekend of the regular season with a chance to rise as high as second in the conference, but instead finished with a 15-7 record and are now slotted into the four vs. five match up.
Â
5 Things
Â
1: First-year Huskies head coach
Nathan Bennett will be looking to pick up his first playoff series victory at the Canada West level this weekend.
Â
2: Saskatchewan rose to number eight in the national rankings, while Mount Royal, who were fourth in the country prior to their matchup against the Huskies, fell two spots to number six.
Â
3: The last time the Huskies were in the playoffs they made it all the way for Canada West silver and a fourth-place finish at nationals.
Â
4: Cougars outside hitter Tyler Schmidt became the Canada West career points and career kills leader this past weekend.
Â
5: Mount Royal will play host to Canada West playoff action for the first time in program history at Kenyon Court this weekend.
