Huskies finish 2019 with sweep of Cougars

SASKATOON – Jessica Vance's third shutout this season, paired with Leah Bohlken's third goal of the weekend, was enough to help the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team win 1-0 over the Mount Royal Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday, Nov. 30.

The latest shutout victory for Vance is a meaningful one in the history books. The Prince Albert, Sask. native, who has now won her last four starts, moves into sole possession of third all-time in Canada West career shutouts. Vance, who has 18 in her conference career, is only one away from tying Dana Vinge for second in Canada West history.

The shutout win seals what was a pivotal weekend for the Huskies, who recorded two regulation wins to climb into a tie for second in the Canada West with Alberta with 29 points. Meanwhile, Mount Royal, who entered the weekend tied with Saskatchewan, now sit in fifth in the conference.

Leah Bohlken registered the lone goal on the evening, as her snipe just 14 seconds into the second period stood as the game-winner. Bailee Bourassa added an assist on the marker to extend her point streak to four games, while Brooklyn Haubrich also tacked on assist, her sixth of the season.

Zoe DeBeauville did her part to keep the Cougars in the contest, but unfortunately for the fifth-year netminder, her club was unable to find twine, and her 21-save performance was all for naught.

After a dominant first period, which saw the Huskies outshoot the Cougars 12-1, Saskatchewan wasted little time to strike in the second. Bohlken gained separation in the slot, as Bourassa found the defenceman with a perfect pass who proceeded to make no mistake, rifling her wrister past DeBeauville to make it 1-0 in favour of the Huskies.

However, Bohlken's goal appeared to awaken the Cougars. Following the tally, Mount Royal outshot Saskatchewan 12-2 from that moment on in the second period. But Vance was equal to the task in the frame in what was her busiest 20 minutes of the evening.

The Huskies were able to hold off the Cougars in the third, as Vance stood strong, backstopping her team to their third consecutive victory.

Following the Holiday break, Saskatchewan will take the road to Edmonton to meet up with the Pandas to kickstart the second half of the season. Meanwhile, the Cougars will be back at home as they receive a prime opportunity to get back in the win column, as they welcome the Manitoba Bisons to the Stampede City for a pair of contests.

All of the action can be watched live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
